SCHOOLGIRLS LEAGUE 2008 - 2009

Preview for 21st / 22nd November

It's up to the gods again this coming weekend and we hope that a few dry days will allow the League to get back to some normality.

In the Under 12 Premier Division, leaders Lakewood Athletic have a free week so the other sides will all be hoping to bridge the gap at the top of the table. Second placed College Corinthians make the trip to Ballinhassig  while Buttevant have a home tie against bottom placed Wilton United.

In Division 1, it's very tight at the top of the table. Leader Kinsale have a home tie against Crosshaven who are just three points behind their hosts. Joint second placed Innishvilla will be confident of a home win against Carrigaline United while bottom side Glounthaune United are looking for their first points as they take on neighbours Midleton at Glenmore Park.

In Division 2, leaders Riverstown FC have a home tie against St. Marys. Richmond FC host Avondale United while Passage are at home to Youghal United.

On to the Under 16 Premier and it's top versus bottom as joint leaders Lakewood Athletic visit Youghal United. The other joint leaders, Wilton United travel to Crosshaven.

In Division 1, leaders Ballincollig should stay ahead of the rest when they entertain bottom placed St.Marys. Carrigaline United will want to keep the pressure on the leaders when they entertain neighbours Passage. It will be a tight affair at Moneygourney when Douglas Hall play Glounthaune United and likewise at Brigowen when Park United entertain Richmond FC.

Results From 14th / 15th November

Game are few and far between at the moment as once again many ties were washed out. The often maligned all weather pitches are the only survivors and it's at times like these that every club would love to have these facilities.

In the Under 18 League, Douglas Hall recorded their second victory of the season as they defeated joint leaders Carrigaline United at Moneygourney. Laura Cooney got the only goal of the game. Lakewood Athletic share the top spot after their 5 - 1 victory over Ballincollig. See MATCH REPORT.

Carrigaline United did have a victory in the Under 14 Division 1 as they defeated Kinsale AFC 6 - 1 at Ballea Park. See MATCH REPORT.

Results From 7th / 8th November

Weather upset the fixture list again this weekend with a number of games off. What did go ahead was the Under 12 Premier tie where Lakewood Athletic were comprehensive winners over Wilton United. A Ciara Nevin hat trick, two from Evelyn Daly and one apiece from Lydia Looney and Christine Coffey ensured that Lakewood remain unbeaten in the League. They were three up at half time in a game that was spoiled by poor weather conditions. Wilton put up a determined performance and had best displays from Orla Cotter in goal, Rebecca Sheehan, Aoife Nic A Bhaird and Emma Buckley. Lakewood had solid displays from Lauren Elsey, Ali Brady and Tara Lynch.

We had 3 Division 1 game going ahead including the tie between Crosshaven and Glounthaune United. Despite having only 8 players on duty, Glounthaune really made a great game of it and were unlucky not to hit the target early in the game but Crosser's defence did their job and after 15 minutes they got the breakthrough with a fine goal from Ciara O'Keeffe. O'Keeffe went on to score two more before the break. The rain got steadily worse as the second half progressed and it was a relief to both sides when the ref blew the full time whistle with the score remaining 3 - 0 to Crosshaven. Glounthaune's keeper Alison Murphy was outstanding as well as Erin Kand and Elena Fleming. Crosshaven had outstanding displays from Elaine Hoey, Tara Maher and Shauna McKenna.

Also in the same division Kinsale travelled the short journey to Carrigaline and came away with the points after a 0 - 1 victory. Both sides were even enough in the first half and it was Kinsale who made the breakthrough with a Siabh O'Leary goal. The second half saw Carrigaline take a hold of the game and they were constantly pressing the visitors but their keeper was well up to the task. Time and luck eventually ran out for the home side. Carrigaline had excellent performances from Grace Bateman in goal, defenders Eimear Drummond, Belen De Luis and Emma Walsh, midfielders Christian Dring, Deimante Lasukaite, Lauren Kelleher and Lauren Murphy and Kate and Ali Byrne up front. Siabh O'Leary, Meadbh O'Leary and Ali Hill were Kinsale's top performers.

The third game in this Division was a very tight affair between Douglas Hall and Innishvilla with the Hall edging a 1 - 0 victory.Michaela O'Rourke got the winner while Lorna McCutcheon in goal, Chantelle Morrissey, Nicole O'Callaghan, Rachel O'Loughlin and Rachel Holland were all excellent for Douglas. Innishvilla had top class performances from keeper Maeve O'Sullivan, Maeve O'Brien, Jennifer Murphy, Lisa and Kate Lynch.

Carrigaline United keep the pressure on at the top following their win at Richmond in the Under 16 First Division.

In the Under 18 League, Douglas Hall had a 3 - 1 victory over Passage at Moneygourney. Sarah Clune, Ellen Shine and Laura Cooney were the goal scorers for the winners with Natasha O'Sullivan getting the Passage goal.

Results From 31st October / 1st November

Claire Shine hit both goals and there were fine displays from Ashling Fox, Rebecca O'Callaghan and Rachel McCarthy. In the Corinthians side, Kate Fitzpatrick and Michelle O'Mahony put in great work all through. Wilton United continue to lead the pack after a comprehensive 0 - 6 victory at Glounthaune United.

In the Under 14 First Division, Carrigaline United stay top of the ladder with a close 6 - 0 home win over Richmond. Kinsale jumped into second spot after their tight 3 - 2 over Youghal United.  See MATCH REPORT.

There was one outstanding Under 12 Division 2 game played at Riverstown FC where the home side played out a 0 - 0 draw in an exciting tie with Richmond FC. See MATCH REPORT. This result keeps Riverstown at the top of the table.

Results From 24th / 25th October

Kinsale and Innishvilla stay joint top of the Under 12 First Division with 100% records after this weekend's games. Kinsale were convincing 5 - 0 winners over Douglas Hall, who now move back to third in the table. Innishvilla travelled to Glounthaune United and came away with the three points after a hard fought 1 - 2 victory. After this performance, it's hard to understand how Glounthaune are still pointless so far this season. Sarah Butler and Jennifer Murphy were on the score sheet for Innishvilla while Helen Lynch and Maeve O'Brien were excellent. Nicole Cashman was the goal scorer for Glounthaune United while Lilly Healy and Elena Fleming played well.

All game in the Under 12 Division 2 were cancelled due to weather or postponed to next weekend but on Thursday October 29th Riverstown FC played Passage at Brooklodge in a game that was brought forward from November 7th and the game resulted in a 5 - 1 victory for Riverstown, with two goals from Ciara O'Sullivan, and one each from Amy O'Lehan, Aoife O'Brien and Roisin O'Donovan. This win puts Riverstown FC at the top of the table.

The Under 16 Division 1 top of the table clash between Carrigaline United and Ballincollig at Ballea Park on Friday night finished in a 0 - 1 win for the visiting Ballincollig. This was the first time a Carrigaline schoolgirls side played under lights both side contributed to a very entertaining game. Carrigaline had a number of one on one with the opposing keeper but could not find a break through. The deadlock was eventually broken in the second half when a long range Amy Wilson strike caught out the keeper off her line. Up until then she was having an excellent game in goals. Carrigaline's best on the night were Kirsty Roberts, Rachel Griffin, Maeve Cole and player of the match performance from Ruan MacSweeney in defence. Ballincollig were best served by Niamh Coughlan and Nicole Smith.

In the other game of the round, Glounthaune United won by the odd goal in a 9 goal thriller at Crosshaven. Emer Gilroy is on song again this season and came away from this one with another hat-trick Crosshaven opened the scoring with a goal from Megan O'Keeffe. But the visitors came back strong to go 1 - 3 ahead. Crosshaven made it 2 - 3 just before the break to set up a cracking second half. Glounthaune then went further ahead courtesy of a kind deflection off the referee. Crosshaven heads went down after that and the visitors scored their fifth. To their credit Crosshaven battled on and did bring it back to 4 - 5 but Glounthaune held on to claim the three points. The other Glounthaune goals came from Amy O'Reilly and Moyra Morrissey while the other Crosshaven goals came from Anna Rearden (2) and Jenna O'Shea. A happy Riverstown FC Under 12 outfit after their first win in their debut football season

Passage suffered their first defeat of the season when they went down 3 - 0 at Richmond. Despite Passage having only 10 players, this was a very even tie overall even though the visitors felt a little unhappy with some of the ref's decisions. Passage had to put an outfield player into goal in the second half which dented their chances but it was Richmond's day and they took their chances when they came their way. Meanwhile in the Under 16 Premier Division, Lakewood Athletic kept up their winning ways, this time with a 4 - 0 victory over Crosshaven. SENIOR WOMEN''S LEAGUE

CUP FINALS

First we had the double header at Turners Cross. The Umbro Kevin Barry Cup Final was a unique affair as it involved two sides playing in their debut season. It was the Division 1 champions Ballinhassig who lifted the Cup and proved just too strong on the night for their opponents, Division 2 champions Crosshaven. But both sides can look forward to lots of success in the future.

Ballinhassig Senior side of 2009

In the Umbro Steve Quinn Cup Final it was the holders Wilton United who once again powered to victory, this time over a gallant Carrigaline United side. Wilton's first half performance was outstanding and they ensured there was no way back for their brave opponents.

The finale of the season was the Umbro Challenge Cup Final where Wilton United had the fright of their lives before getting the better of Douglas Hall. Hall looked like having the game won when Wilton United levelled the game deep into added time (greatly contested by Douglas) and then got the winner in extra time.

We welcome reports and photographs from games but would ask that when doing a match report to include names and scorers from the opposition.

2009 International Childrens Games

The games kicked off in Athens Wednesday, June 24th and our proud representatives from Cork were in action in the first game against Greece side Heraklio. It was the best possible start as they won that game 1 - 0.

On the next day, June 25th, they had two games to play. The first in the morning against a side they had come across last year, Los Gatos from California. This ended in a 0 - 0 draw. Then that evening they played Kitchener from Canada but this time it ended in defeat for the girls, going down 2 - 0. Two games in this heat might just have been too much for our fair skinned girls.

On Friday June 26th, they played their final game against local side Athens and drew 0 - 0 which meant they qualified for the semi-final and a chance to gain revenge against Kitchener. Unfortunately despite putting up a great performance, they went down 0 - 1 to the Canadians.

This left them in the tie for 3rd and 4th place against Athens, who they had drawn with previously. Again there was nothing between the sides and the game went all the way to penalties, where the local side came out on top.

So ended a tiring but exciting week for the girls who gave a great account of themselves and return home with pride in their performances.
